day eight

thirteenth march 1999

whitehaven -> leicester

woke after lou had left for the wild northlands, she had a ridiculously early train to catch. after breakfast, i cycled down to whitehaven, avoiding the stones being hurled down at me by the charming juvenile population of cleator moor, and got to whitehaven station in plenty of time. i was returning to leicester via newcastle (return ticket), but my itinerary required some degree of good fortune if it was to work. in order to catch the train at newcastle, for which i had a cycle reservation, i had to get two trains that did not accept reservations, and allowed cycles on board at the guards discression. a crazy system if ever there was one.
as it happened, lady luck was up for it, and my journey home though long, was simple & uneventful.

epilogue:
i sent the stamped card, and my cheque off, looking forward to receiving my reivers route t-shirt. as diana ross once sang, "i'm still waiting".
